The MySQL Data Backup Tool creates a zipped sql database (or set of tables) backup, and then it checks to see if each of the following has also been created:
- A Daily Backup
- A Monthly Backup
- A Yearly Backup
So that you end up with '20' copies of your current data ... 1 for each day (7) , one for each month (12) and finally 1 per year. This way, you have a limited set of backups, but they represent a very large period of time. This method saves a ton of space, but still gives you a great deal of flexible restore options!
